As-Salaamu Alaikum Everybody,

Next Tuesday insha’Allah we’ll be holding our spring speaker event. The event will feature Jehane Noujaim, 2006 TED Prize winner and director of Control Room and Startup.com. Noujaim will address the power of film in bridging cross-cultural divides and promoting understanding.

Here’s some information about her:

Jehane Noujaim is an award-winning Arab-American documentary film director best known for her films Startup.com and Control Room, an astonishing documentary about Al Jazeera’s coverage of the Iraq war and the contrasting notions of truth expressed in the US media. She is also the recipient of the 2006 TED Prize, with which she created a world-uniting international celebration of film, Pangea Day.

Being raised between Egypt and the US and having studied at Harvard University, the exploration of culture is one of Jehane’s driving forces. Her reason for making Control Room: “It’s important for everyone, simply as individuals, to try to understand different people and different cultures, but it’s especially important for people in the United States because we affect so much of the world beyond our borders.” Noujaim’s earlier film, Startup.com, follows an arc that mirrors the curve of the dotcom bubble itself, capturing a small Internet company from its eager beginnings through the manic, moneyed times right down to the bitter end.

Noujaim has worked on various documentaries in both the Middle East and the U.S. as a director and cinematographer. Before culture even begins to shift, Jehane is there with her camera, trusting that the story to unfold is one that will change us.
